Chiang Rai Thailand is the most northern province of Thailand and is about 785 kilometers north of Bangkok. The mighty Mekong River creates a border in the north to both Laos and Myanmar (Burma). The King Mengrai the Great Memorial is located in the town on the intersection leading to Mae Chan. King Mengrai monument honours the monarch who found the Chiang Rai as an administrative centre in 1262. The monument is rarely without its incense- burning and flower-laying devotees.
